Holiday Club: 19-22 December 2016. The Whole Story: What is in the attic? – (10-14 Yrs)

    Led by Sarah Mussi
THE Christmas season is a time for relaxing, eating and being happy, but it is also a time to reflect on the darker aspects of life (and death) to prepare the way for changes in the New Year. This is why Christmas is also a time for ghost tales and stories that make your blood run cold…

So imagine you are going to stay with a distant aunt for Christmas. Your parents for some unexpected reason have got to travel. You are alone. It is cold, and when you arrive, in the middle of nowhere, you find that everything is not as expected. For a start ‘auntie’ is ill and can't leave the house – plus she insists there's something in the attic…

    But what?

Strange noises, a window rattling – doors creaking and sometimes footsteps …

What are you going to do? Auntie is too ill to go and check, and you don’t know anyone in the neighbourhood, plus now it's the Christmas season and nobody will come out to help – but worst of all the phone lines don’t work and there’s no mobile coverage.
Really, what are you going to do?
Create your own Christmas story – how scary is it going to get? Is there evil in the attic, or are there ghosts, haunted creatures trying to get back to their own time, or trying to warn you of something terrible?

Like Charles Dickens’s: A CHRISTMAS CAROL and Sarah Mussi’s: HERE BE DRAGONS join our sessions, and write a very traditional scary story. Bring your imagination, all your spooky en-counters and find out WHAT’S IN THE ATTIC?

Sarah Mussi is a multi-award winning author of children’s and YA fiction. Her first novel The Door of No Return won the Glen Dimplex & Irish Writers’ Children’s Book Award and was shortlisted for the Branford Boase. Her thriller Siege was nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal (2014) and won the BBUKYA award for contemporary YA fiction. Her novel Riot won the Lancashire Book of the Year Award 2015. Bomb, 2015, was listed in The Guardian New Best Kids Books 2015 list. Her latest novel Here Be Dragons, has already been showcased in the People’s Book Prize. .

Holiday Club: 19-22 December 2016. The Whole Story: The Hero’s Journey – (8-12 Yrs)

    Led by Andrew Weale
Let’s go on a journey together. This is not going to be an ordinary journey. This is going to be the journey of a hero or heroine into a world of challenge and danger, like Frodo Baggins on his quest to destroy the One Ring.

Following the story map of the Hero’s Journey, as designed by Joseph Campbell, we will explore four stages of the heroic journey over four days and create a mini novel. The story will range from the ordinary world of the hero to a sudden call to adventure. The hero will then enter another world, a world where (s)he is challenged to the limit. And then the final showdown will come, and the hero/heroine will face the most deadly challenge of all. But don’t worry, they will return, and they will bring something extraordinary back to the world that they left at the beginning.

The hero’s journey is a great story. Explore it on this four-day course, and discover the hero or heroine that lies within you!

Andrew Weale is the author of five picture books. These include the innovative pop up Spooky Spooky House, overall winner of the 2013 Red House Children’s Book Award. As well as writing, he is a professional actor and singer and has worked with luminaries such as Alec Guinness and Kevin Spacey. He is now a lecturer on children’s writing at Winchester University and gives popu-lar visits to many schools and festivals around the country.

    Led by Alan Durant
Who? Why? Where? When? How? These are just some of the questions a good, exciting mystery story poses and eventually, after many intriguing twists and turns, answers. Enter the world of curious events, suspicious characters and atmospheric settings; of red herrings and grey alibis; of investiga-tions and accusations, of mystery and suspense – plus, as this is a seasonal course, of puzzling pud-dings and Christmas conundrums too! Alan Durant has been a fan of mystery stories ever since he first read Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five series and Agatha Christie’s Poirot whodunnits. Join him on this course of four lively and informative writing workshops, in which you’ll learn about the essential elements of a gripping and successful seasonal mystery story – from ideas to plotting to resolution – and create a whole new one of your own!

Alan Durant is an award-winning author of over a hundred books for children of all ages – from pic-ture books to novels for young adults. Holiday Club: Easter 08 April 2019. One-day Workshop. When Strangers Come to Town – (8-12 Yrs)

When a group of Romany gypsy caravans arrive in your town everyone is suspicious, including you. Who are they? Can they be trusted? And what do they want? As the newcomers settle in, the town is rife with gossip of spells cast in ancient magic rituals and the mayhem caused by the dizzy playing of fiddles which accompany late night dancing. Curious, you set out to find out the truth about these exotic strangers, and, in doing so you befriend one of them – a girl, the same age as you.
As your friendship grows not only do you find yourself drawn into a mystery you hadn’t expected but you discover the fearless nature of your new found friend.
Whether your heroine is Lara Croft, Hermione Granger, or Matilda, join us as we weave multi-layered tales of female empowerment and courage and explore the meaning of true friendship.

This workshop would give the children a chance to explore discrimination and dig deep to examine what drives it. As well as this, the story arc dictates that there should be a change in attitude, brought about by the hero. In addition, the children would have the opportunity to gain an understanding of genetically distinct ethnic groups, such as Roma.

Holiday Club: Easter 12 April 2019. One-day Workshop. Warriors in the Mists – (8-12 Yrs)

You’ve been looking forward to this for months – your holiday trip to the Warrior Exhibition at the British Museum. You’ve been online and checked out the displays and the more you look the more excited you become. You’ve even planned which exhibits to visit first – you’re going to start with Genghis Khan – war lord and founder of the Mongol Empire. Next will be King Alfred – apparently, they’re giving away free cupcakes at that display – he did burn the cakes, after all. Then there’s some examples from the Terracotta Army – found in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. After that will be Hannibal and his elephants, not real elephants, obviously. Then there’s the mythology section where you’ll start with King Arthur and move on to the epic poem Beowulf. And finally, once you’ve seen everything else, you’re going to visit Boudica, the warrior queen. She is your heroine, after all.
Join us we walk in the midst of warriors, both real and imagined, and create killer plots and craft epic tales of courage and treachery; love and friendship; duty and power. Who will be your warrior icon?
