  • Autumn Term 2018: Hone Your Writing Basics + SPaG Me Up (Years 3, 4), Saturday (St John’s Notting Hill, 11:30)

Hone Your Writing Basics provides emerging young writers with the basic tools they need to start writing compelling stories. Focussing on taking your child through the rudiments of prose writing, this course will ensure they are well-positioned to tackle the challenges of the creative element of Key Stage 2 with aplomb. All areas, including plotting, story-boarding narratives, character creation and the effective use of literary devices will be covered, including a ‘Spag Me Up’ extension at Saturday Clubs where children are guided to consolidate their grammar knowledge by using a games-based approach. We’ll be focussing on expanding the children’s vocabularies and picking up tips on spelling, punctuation and grammar in order to encourage their storytelling to be fluid and dynamic.

In every session the children get the chance to put their knowledge to the test by responding to a writing prompt, encouraging them to apply the skills they have acquired in written tasks and stimulating exercises. Our workshops strongly encourage creative thinking, avoiding limits such as the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to use the imagination.  As a result, there is no direct marking system – but we do review your child’s work during each session, providing verbal feedback and further guidance on developing ideas/ storyline structures/ descriptive devices. Your child will also receive written feedback upon their completion of the course.

  • Autumn Term 2018: Editing Course: Write and Revise (Years 4–6), Saturday (St John’s Notting Hill, 10:00)

With a focus on crucial aspects of structure, content, language, style, punctuation, spelling and grammar, this course will teach your child how to best approach written tasks with a fully-formed critical eye. It will be beneficial for any child looking to hone their writing skills and develop a suite of useful and practical authorial skills.

Aimed at Years 4-5-6, writers analyse extracts from novels and proofread incomplete texts in order to understand how the story-telling greats captivate their readers, and how to look for mistakes in order to revise work. They then go on to apply their skills in writing their own stories, which includes coming up with original tales and self-reflecting and critiquing in order to be able to write with both accuracy and flair. Our course leader will guide and teach  how to rework and edit their writing in the most effective way.

    Learning Objectives

    1. To broaden vocabulary.
    2. To understand a wider range of literary devices.
    3. To refine their grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
    4. To sharpen critical thinking and reading skills.
    5. To understand and identify literary themes in stories, and use these to inspire and inform their own writing.
    6. To accurately critique, revise and improve their own stories.

    Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, editors should be able to:

    1. Identify good story telling, and the specific devices writers use to achieve this.
    2. Compare the writing styles of different authors.
    3. Apply literary devices that they have seen in other texts to their own work (for example: simile, metaphor, pacing, anthropomorphisation, alliteration…)
    4. Have a keen eye for detail, spotting errors of spelling, grammar and punctuation in both their own writing and the writing of others.
    5. Effectively answer comprehensive questions on a text under timed conditions.
    6. Be confident in giving, receiving and applying aural feedback.
    7. Articulate their analysis of writing in a way which is backed up with in-text evidence and quotations. (I.e. “I empathised with the protagonist because the author included descriptive details such as ‘x’ and ‘y’, which made them feel more relatable to me”).
