One-Day Holiday Workshops

  • Holiday Club: 22 October 2018. One-day Workshop. Spoof Spectacular – Making Hilarity out of Historical Fiction! – (8-12 Yrs)

You’d thought your life couldn’t get any more bonkers after your parents caught a strange disease making them yellow and crinkly-round-the-edges – but then, you didn’t know you were about the get shipped off with your mad Uncle and your even madder Aunty to spare you from smelling like old water bottles forever. You also didn’t know you’d end up having to wriggle your way out of an awful orphanage. Perhaps you’ll never find out how you ended up in this story. Perhaps you’ll find out in this workshop.

One of the best formats for rip-roaring writing is the spoof – that is, to take a well established literary style and twist it to your own comic ends. Philip Ardagh is just one example of a parody artist loved by kids, and his Eddie Dickens trilogy is perhaps one of the best historical spoofs for children out there! Taking the typically tragic subject matter of, in this case, Charles Dickens’ novels and turning it on its head, we will be becoming experts on writing the unexpected with hilarious results.

In this workshop, we’ll be learning just how to find inspiration from other literary styles to create wacky characters, and produce our own parody narrative writing style to leave our readers laughing out loud.

  • Holiday Club: 23 October 2018. One-day Workshop. Writing In the Outcast… Unlikely Detectives! – (8-12 Yrs)

Ever since the death of your baby brother, you’d always had the need to take in every detail of your surroundings. Some people called it a ‘gift’, to remember and observe so many things going on around you – others called you a weirdo, a freak. All it left you with was a crippling fear of leaving the house. Today seemed like a fairly usual day; your neighbours were going about their usual weekend routines (which, of course, you knew on a minute-by-minute basis), until Old Nina across the street watered her plants 40 minutes late, and an unusual car appeared to drop off two unfamiliar faces next door. It wasn’t until later that you found out about the disappearance of a boy from the cul-de-sac, and that you were the last one to see him!

Writers come from all different kind of backgrounds, and so do the narrators in their books! In Lisa Thomspon’s ‘Goldfish Boy’, for example, an 11 year old with OCD ends up unravelling a complex mystery involving the disappearance of a toddler. In this workshop, we’ll being creating characters who triumph against the odds to solve a complex mystery full of twists, turns, and red herrings.

Discover how to write a compelling ‘underdog’ character and develop and intricate murder-mystery plot for them to unravel.

  • Holiday Club: 24 October 2018. One-day Workshop. Action in Nature – Tiny Accomplices, Big Accomplishments! – (8-12 Yrs)

You’ve lost friends, gained friends, and nearly lost them all again – but in the end you’ve come up trumps with the help of your beetle companions. Now you must face a new cold, calculating opponent as the mysteries surrounding those closest to you (and you yourself) thicken. Is it possible to reveal the truth when you’re surrounded by (often small, winged) spies?

We’ll be donning our magnifying glasses to scrutinise the smallest details of our stories, and to summon up our small but mighty characters. Inspired by stories from MG Leonard’s beetles, to Mary Norton’s Borrowers, to Terry Pratchett’s Wee Free Men, we’ll be looking for big ideas in little characters. Fast-paced, gripping and meticulously plotted, our writers’ stories will be aspiring to pack a punch from start to end.

Join us to examine just how writers like MG Leonard whip up relentless action and adventure between the covers of their novels, and get inspired to unravel complex mysteries of your own.

The island, you discover, is steeped in powerful magic that could be devastating in the wrong hands. Luckily, your grandfather has kept this magic safe for a generation – but now the time has come for him to step down. As the call for a new Keeper arises, so does an ancient, dark force which seeks to rekindle an age-old war. Will you step up to be secret Keeper? Who will wield the power of Arranmore?

Two years later, however, school life is set to get darker and more mystical at every turn, as family secrets come to light and more keys to your past are revealed … just don’t enter the Forbidden Forest at a full moon …

In this workshop, we will be looking at how some of the best selling children’s author’s of all time, just like JK Rowling, crafts fantasy stories which entertain adults and children alike.
