30 May–02 June 2022. May Half Term 11 Plus English Exam Preparation Course (Y5) – Online
The 11 Plus English Exam Preparation Course is an intensive, week-long course designed to provide a definitive boost in skill development pertaining to 11+ English. At this stage, it is important for Year 5s to build confidence, and so the core of the May half-term course is to introduce students to new exam techniques that will help them apply their reading and writing skills within the exam format. We will be educating students on key terminology found within various exam papers and the instructive information that can be derived. We will also be introducing students to different exam paper styles and formats, as well as how to approach them differently. But of course, the primary skills developed themselves will revolve heavily around appropriate reading and writing skills for comprehension and composition. Children will study a range of texts from 11 Plus English exam papers, directing their focus on reading for meaning, selecting apt textual evidence to support points and then how to interpret analysed reading material in written form. Answering questions in a timed exam environment will also be a focus. Children will also learn how to write creatively for assessment, in both timed and assisted conditions; how to interpret the 11+ creative writing questions imaginatively; how to create interesting beginnings; how to build & describe a character and develop plot & structure for time restricted scene-writing. The children will stretch their written vocabulary, learning how to write for specific purposes and audiences. In-class feedback will be provided – not only for writing itself, but also for time-management, analytical and creative thinking. We expect everyone who joins our holiday courses, not matter what level or background, to finish the course feeling more confident, and more skilled from when they started the course. We also recognise that, aside from the exams themselves, we are developing long-term skills in reading and writing, and so, even if your child is not sitting for the 11+, we believe that by joining this course, they still have much to gain. This is the first holiday course that we run for Year 5 students throughout our academic 11+ preparation cycle, and so you can expect the nature of the course itself to be fairly introductory, yet appropriate for both experienced students and those who are new to 11+ preparation.
